San Diego - Key Information

The San Diego Jewish Community

San Diego's Jewish community, numbering approximately 100,000 people, is one of the largest and most vibrant on the West Coast, with a rich history dating back to the 1850s when the first Jewish settlers arrived during the California Gold Rush era. The community is served by dozens of synagogues spanning all denominations—from Orthodox to Reform to Reconstructionist—as well as Jewish Community Centers, the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center being a major hub for cultural and recreational activities. The area is home to significant Jewish institutions including the San Diego Jewish Academy, various day schools, and the Jewish Federation of San Diego, which coordinates philanthropic efforts and community programs. La Jolla and other coastal neighborhoods have historically had strong Jewish populations, and the community has played an influential role in San Diego's civic, business, and cultural life, contributing to everything from biotech innovation to the arts scene, while maintaining active connections to Israel and supporting robust interfaith dialogue initiatives throughout the region.

Jewish Key Political Concerns:

Jewish San Diegans prioritize issues including combating antisemitism, supporting strong U.S.-Israel relations, protecting civil rights and religious freedom, addressing homelessness and affordable housing, quality public education, environmental sustainability, and immigrant and refugee rights. The community has been particularly engaged in local debates around hate crime prevention, especially following national rises in antisemitic incidents.

Civic Engagement of the San Diego Jewish Community:

San Diego Jews demonstrate high voter turnout and active participation in local campaigns, policy advocacy, and community organizing. Jewish values organizations provide voter guides analyzing candidates and ballot measures through the lens of Jewish ethical principles, helping community members make informed decisions that reflect their values while respecting diverse political viewpoints within the community.

Political Dynamics:

The Jewish community reflects broader San Diego political diversity—while many Jews support progressive causes and Democratic candidates, there's also significant conservative representation, particularly around fiscal issues and Israel policy. Internal community tensions sometimes emerge around Israel-Palestine issues, with debates about how local Democratic clubs should frame their support for Israel. A 2018 controversy over naming a proposed "Democrats for Israel" club versus "Jewish Democrats" highlighted these sensitivities within the local party structure.
